The fourth European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) conference is organised by the Flemish government, Department of Economy, Science and Innovation in close collaboration with the European Commission. The conference will be fully in line with the past SET-Plan events. Its main objectives are:

  • Communication on the progress of the implementation of the SET-Plan to a broad range of stakeholders, including the research community, the industry, the policy makers, the financial community and international partners.
  • Round-up of the realisations so far with regard to the set up of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs) and the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), with special focus on the Smart Cities Initiative.
  • The launching of two next EIIs: Bioenergy and Sustainable Nuclear energy.
  • The launching of the next EERA Joint Programmes.
  • The international cooperation dimension within the SET-Plan.

15 November 2010 - The SET-Plan: State of play

The main objective of the first day is the launch of the two European Industrial Initiatives for Bioenergy and Sustainable Nuclear energy. Furthermore, the conference will give an overview of the progress of all SET-Plan action lines three years after the launch of the first SET-Plan communication 'Towards a low carbon future'. Therefore progress concerning the EIIs launched in Madrid, the Smart Cities Initiative implementation and the EERA Joint Programmes will be underlined. The conference will offer a comprehensive picture of the complementarities between the different energy technology initiatives in Europe.

16 November 2010 - Kick-off of the international dimension of the SET-Plan

On March 12 the EU Energy Council conclusions on the SET-Plan investment Communication also highlighted the role of international cooperation and invited the Commission to take forward, in close coordination with Member States, existing and recently established forms of cooperation in order to ramp up international cooperation and to improve coordination of the EU actions with key strategic partners in both developed and developing countries, as well as with international organisations.

The SET-Plan Conference held from 3-4 June in Madrid under the Spanish Presidency included a roundtable discussion to open the discussion on the international dimension of the SET-Plan. Under the Belgian presidency, it was agreed to include a dedicated session on the "Kick-off of the international dimension of the SET-Plan" with focus on best practices and based on existing and recently established forms of cooperation.

The aim of this second day is to examine existing and recently established forms of cooperation at Member States and international organisation level and provide a platform for interaction in order to identify relevant elements/examples for the creation of an international cooperation strategy in the SET-Plan.
